I was reading this and the first reply called to mind your rant about figure skating in the Winter Olympics, which I had totally forgotten (I thought)
and I Googled it and I realised it was just in February…but it felt like you told me about it late last year or something
it just feels weird that things can change so quickly.

I’m sure everyone knows how unhappy many people are with Chinese eateries sprouting like mushrooms, especially in hawker centres (!).
I don’t remember any backlash against the proliferation of Japanese (and later, Korean) restaurants, way back when, though. why is that so…?
one explanation is that Japanese and Korean tourists simply don’t have as bad a reputation and/or their cultures are considered more desirable, I guess? or perhaps it’s just the sheer velocity; like if you compare Bugis/Chinatown to what they were like 5 years ago…
I feel, keenly, old.
